Tafel Kevelaer e.V.

In Germany, over eleven million people live in income poverty or are directly threatened by it: these include the unemployed (including many single parents), low earners and pensioners. Many of them cannot make ends meet despite being thrifty. When money is tight, most of them cut back on food. Fresh fruit and vegetables, milk and meat in particular become luxury goods that those affected can rarely afford - to the detriment of their health.

At the same time, supermarkets, bakeries, events, retailers and food wholesalers can dispose of large quantities of food every day, which - although it is of perfect quality - is no longer used in the economic cycle.

The food banks try to compensate for this: they collect "surplus" food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute it to socially and economically disadvantaged people - free of charge.

An idea that benefits everyone involved: Food donors assume social responsibility and save disposal costs. And those in need receive high-quality food and motivation for the future at the same time.
