as a road maintenance worker (m/f/d)

In this three-year apprenticeship, we will make you fit in theory and practice!

Road maintenance workers check traffic routes for damage, maintain them and keep them in good condition. They remove dirt, make roadworks and accident sites safe and carry out clearing and gritting work.

The relevant knowledge and skills are taught at the depot of the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer and at the vocational school (in Kempen).

For example, you learn in the training company:

  • to check building materials and auxiliary building materials as well as finished parts for completeness, usability, damage and dimensional accuracy; to initiate complaints
  • Create and maintain green spaces
  • Recognize and secure danger spots; take measures to eliminate danger spots
  • Selecting and setting up or applying traffic signs and marking materials
  • apply traffic and road regulations as well as data protection regulations
  • assess soils with regard to their suitability for construction
  • Maintain roadways; carry out surface treatments and cut, clean and grout joints
  • to initiate switching operations on traffic control systems, in particular when carrying out own measures
  • Carry out track maintenance tasks; carry out structural observations; take traffic safety measures
  • monitor and document the work of third parties, in particular contracted companies, on the basis of specifications

In addition, knowledge about topics such as rights and obligations during training, organization of the training company and environmental protection is taught throughout the training.

In the vocational school, further knowledge is imparted in job-specific learning fields (e.g. recording traffic and road regulations, maintenance of structures and concrete roadways) as well as in general education subjects such as German and economics and social studies.


We are looking for people who are eager to learn, committed, communicate positively and are open to new ideas. We expect:

  • At least a successful secondary school leaving certificate (10a or 10b - Fachoberschulreife - or a comparable school education from another system)
  • manual dexterity
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • High motivation, willingness to perform and learn
  • independent work

The pilgrimage town of Kevelaer regularly trains one trainee (m/f/d) in this profession. As a rule, the training position is reallocated every three years (after the previous trainee (m/f/d) has completed their training).
