Tips on what to do in extreme heat

"High outside temperatures affect the body in many ways, especially the cardiovascular system," says medical officer Dr. Martina Scherbaum. A greater loss of fluids has an effect on the flow properties of the blood. The body also has to actively maintain a constant body temperature. "These factors are also a major burden for younger people, especially when they have a fever. However, older people are particularly affected due to previous illnesses, medication and an age-related reduced ability to adapt." People with more experience of heat, for example from southern Europe, have a certain physical acclimatization to these temperatures. "People who are normally used to cooler and temperate regions such as Germany, on the other hand, react more sensitively and quickly to heat stress."
