In future, the new parking guidance system will display the number of free parking spaces. To do this, it will determine how many parking spaces are still free in each parking lot. Two types of sensor are used: camera-based sensors and ground sensors. The ground sensors are used where camera sensors do not work, e.g. in the shade of trees. The camera sensors have a grid of the parking space stored in the mini-computer and recognize whether a parking bay is occupied or free. This information is transmitted to the parking guidance system. The sensors digitize the parking space and thus generate live occupancy data. No other data is recorded. No personal data is stored.
"The first steps towards restructuring parking in Kevelaer were already taken last year with the new parking fee regulations, the management of additional spaces, uniform parking space naming and the new parking meters. With the installation of the parking guidance system, the parking concept is now complete. This means that out-of-town guests will soon be able to find the cheaper, free parking spaces straight away," says Mayor Dr. Dominik Pichler about the new parking guidance system.
"After a long and intensive planning phase, I'm delighted that things are now getting underway," says Mobility Manager Mara Ueltgesforth. "Preparations for the next steps are already in full swing. The signs for the new parking guidance system are currently being finalized. Once the camera sensors have been installed, the ground sensors will follow. The signs of the old parking guidance system will then be gradually replaced by the new ones. A particular challenge with the new signs is ensuring the power supply for each individual sign."
