There are still many refugees coming to the municipalities who need a roof over their heads in the short term. In Kevelaer, many solutions from recent years (unprofitable rental properties, gymnasiums, etc.) were only of a temporary nature and did not represent a permanent solution due to a lack of time and housing supply.
The new building is simple and functional, yet features modern and economical standards, such as an air-heat pump heating system and automatic ventilation control to minimize damage caused by improper ventilation. The flat roofs have been designed with photovoltaics. The property offers a total of 17 residential units for around 100 people. If the situation eases at some point, the facility could find a useful second use as an apartment building for students or similar.
The outdoor area will also be completed in the first half of the year.
The relocations will take place from next week. The people previously housed on Rheinstraße and Marktstraße will move first. The responsible asylum janitors will be supported by the school janitors and employees of the municipal depot during the relocation work.
Caritas will also move its counseling services to the new refugee accommodation and draw attention to them in the other accommodation facilities.
