Three light bulbs in front of a blue sky

Energy saving tips

Good for the environment, good for your wallet

With the "green" NiersStrom you are already doing a lot for your eco-balance. However, everyone can always do more. We have put together some practical tips for you on how you can reduce your energy consumption with simple measures and thus save money.

  • Tip 1: Unplug

We are all familiar with this, e .g. that little light on the TV is always on. This means that the appliance consumes electricity even when it is supposedly switched off. It is better to simply pull the plug or switch it off using a multiple socket outlet with a power switch when you are away for a longer period of time, e. g. at night.

  • Tip 2: Wash sparingly

A prewash is not normally necessary. You can confidently wash with an economy program. If you also lower the washing temperature from 60º to 30º, only a third of the electricity is used. And of course, it is always better to wait until the machine is full before washing.

  • Tip 3: Clothes horse instead of tumble dryer

A tumble dryer is a really nice thing. The laundry dries quickly and is almost crease-free. But it also consumes a lot of electricity. Especially in summer, you can easily do without the power guzzler and hang up the laundry like in the old days.

  • Tip 4: Turn off the light

The number one rule of thumb is, of course, to switch off all unnecessary lights. For example, why light up rooms where nobody is present?

Compared to incandescent lamps, energy-saving lamps not only save 70 percent electricity and operating costs, but also 80 percentCO2 during production. However, they are not in the best light compared to conventional light bulbs. They contain toxic mercury and are therefore hazardous waste. One alternative is therefore the LED lamp. Although they are more expensive to buy, they soon pay for themselves thanks to their low energy consumption - in comparison, they save 85 percent energy.

  • Tip 5: Small kitchen gadgets

You don't have to use the hob for everything. Kettles, egg boilers and coffee makers use around 40 percent less energy than an electric hob. When using a kettle, make sure you don't fill it with more water than necessary, otherwise the energy requirement andCO2 emissions will increase unnecessarily. In terms of environmental impact, you should avoid espresso machines that use aluminum pods, which are energy-intensive and environmentally harmful to produce.

  • Tip 6: The right fridge

If you need a new fridge, pay attention to the power consumption and the energy label. Ask yourself how big it really needs to be and whether you need a freezer compartment. This will save you electricity and money! Place the refrigerator in a cold place and do not cool it more than necessary. Every degree consumes four percent more electricity. And if you go on vacation, give your fridge a break too: Defrost and switch off.
